Chanmina on her ‘personal’ new album Angel, her Big Bang inspiration and being proud of her heritage

Chamina is back with her deeply personal new single Angel

Chanmina is getting deep and personal with her new album as she feels she ‘can’t lie’ to her fans.

The rapper’s new single Angel – also the same name as her album – explores the conflict between the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ sides of herself and how she struggles with keeping them both in check.

And she has no problems laying it all out there for her fans because they wouldn’t expect anything else from her.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘I write about my relationships, and there’s always someone who has been in a relationship right? That personal stuff always drives me.

‘People always ask, “is that what you were actually thinking, and are you actually going to write about it?”

‘I go quite deep about my relationships, I’m always honest in my music, I can’t lie.’

The four-track album will be out later this year

Chanmina, who has South Korean and Japanese heritage, admits she found it tough bringing her roots into her music but has no problems now.

‘I can use a variety of languages to express my emotions, I can use those emotions more now and it’s easier,’ she said.

‘When I release a music video, people always say to me, “This is so different”. My close fans understand it more and they understand that I want to keep changing and use different styles. Being different itself is my style.’

Having previously had aspirations of being a K-pop star, things stalled, but while she is happy to carve out her own lane she hasn’t given up.

‘I still have that dream of becoming successful in Korea, so I’m working on material only in Korea and targeted to Korea.

‘Whether people want to take it as K-pop, they can. I just do music.’

She hopes some of that music can be with K-pop legends Big Bang, who Chanmina describes as ‘a big portion of water’ in the lake that is her art.

‘I got a lot of influence from them,’ she said of the YG Entertainment boy group, ‘and just I love Avril Lavingne, I look up to her. One of my dreams is to work with her. She’s with my queen.’

Angel is out now followed by the album on 9 September.
