Champions League draw 2019: Chelsea’s possible next opponents ahead of last-16

Chelsea qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Lille.

Frank Lampard’s men held on against the French side after taking a two-goal lead in the first half before Loic Remy pulled one back for the visitors late on.

Chelsea are back in the knockout stages after last making it to the round of 16 in the 2017/18 campaign, where they were beaten by Barcelona across two legs.

How did they make it to the last-16?

Frank Lampard’s side survived a nervy finale to their 2-1 win over Lille on Tuesday night to beat Ajax to second place in Group H by a single point. It was in keeping with an often dramatic campaign for the Londoners, who lost their opening game 1-0 at home to Valencia but, after winning in Lille, secured a vital 1-0 win over Ajax in Amsterdam which Lampard called a coming-of-age moment for his young side.

A wild night followed at Stamford Bridge as they came from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 with Ajax – with Jorginho scoring twice from the penalty spot and the Dutch side playing the last 20 minues with nine men – and it was a result which proved vital in a tight group.

Which teams can Chelsea get?

Group A: Paris Saint-Germain – The French champions have already qualified as the pool winners, with one game left to play. They’ve finished ahead of second-place Real Madrid.

Group B: Bayern Munich – The Germans have one game left to play but all already through to the knockout stages as pool winners.

Group C: N/A – Manchester City topped the group but won’t face Chelsea due to the domestic rule which prevents two teams from the same league being drawn against one another in the last-16.

Group D: Juventus – Five points clear at the top, with a game to play, the Italians comfortably secured their passage into the last-16.

Group E: N/A – Liverpool topped the group but won’t face Chelsea due to the domestic rule which prevents two teams from the same league being drawn against one another in the last-16.

Group F: Barcelona – The Catalans topped the pool and can therefore be drawn against Chelsea

Group G: RB Leipzig – Finished in first place ahead of Lyon.

Group H: N/A

Summary of who Chelsea could be drawn against: PSG, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Barcelona, RB Leipzig.
