The concept behind the tournament was conceived by the team that’s behind ‘Chicken for Charity,’ a popular PUBG fundraising event that was also organised by SpecialEffect.

Tom Donegan, Fundraising and Communications Team Leader at SpecialEffect, commented on the partnership in a release: “This will be the 7th year of GameBlast and we’re always looking for new ideas to add to the mix. We’ve been working on the idea of running a charity tournament with Charlotte and Philip for over a year, so it’s fantastic to be finally bringing Challenger Chicken to life! The money raised will make a big difference, as we work to keep pace with rising demand for our services from disabled gamers across the UK.”

SpecialEffect is looking to recruit up to 64 teams to compete via Challengermode’s platform, charging €10 (£8.30) per player. All entrance fees will be donated to SpecialEffect in support of its efforts to help disabled people access video games.

Philip Hübner, Head of Business Development and Strategy at Challengermode, added: “The team here at Challengermode have been big fans of SpecialEffect’s work for a long time. We all closely followed previous GameBlasts over the years, so we’re incredibly excited to be taking an active part this February, and hopefully for many years to come. Gamers across the board have a great track record in raising money for charity, and we believe we have built the perfect tools to engage the community and drive fundraisers in an exciting new way: through competition.”

Esports Insider says: It is always great to see esports being used to raise money for charitable causes. We hope that SpecialEffect and Challengermode easily manage to recruit the 64 teams they’re hoping for!
