Former Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas has hit back at a fan on Twitter who branded him a snake for patting the Chelsea badge when playing against the Gunners at the Emirates.

The Spaniard, who now plays for Monaco, was Arsenal’s youngster ever captain before leaving to join Barcelona, later returning to the Premier League in 2014 with Chelsea.

Fabregas is clearly still attached to Arsenal, frequently commenting on their matches, and will appear on a fan podcast next week to discuss his time at the north London club.

However, not every Arsenal fan has forgiven him for leaving, with one writing on Twitter that ‘this snake throws our club under the bus with insane levels of snakery’ and referring to a time when he patted the Chelsea badge at the Emirates.

Fabregas was being subbed off when the home fans – who used to cheer him – booed and jeered his departure, so he patted the badge, though now claims he was gesturing to his heart and underlining how much he still cared for Arsenal.

‘If you think I’m capable of doing what you are suggesting I did, you don’t know me at all and my feelings towards all of you whatsoever,’ he posted.

‘I was actually telling the fans they will always be in my heart, but of course your interpretation must be misguided by a simple image.’

Fabregas is currently self-isolating in Monaco, with the Ligue 1 season having been suspended along with the vast majority of leagues around Europe due to the coronavirus crisis.

‘We have to look at the positives of this quarantine and being able to spend so much time with my family it’s definitely one of them for me,’ he said on social media. ‘Be safe, be responsible, stay home.’
