Cesc Fabregas has highlighted Fred’s growing influence at Manchester United after he gave another solid display in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

The Red Devils gave up plenty of chances against Manchester City at the Etihad yet dug in to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win on the night – though it was not enough to turnaround the tie as City progressed to the final 3-2 on aggregate.

After a dismal first season at Old Trafford following his £50million move from Shakhtar Donetsk, Fred’s performances have improved massively this campaign.

Although he missed the first four games of the season, Fred has been a mainstay in the team practically ever since, playing the full 90 minutes in United’s last 17 Premier League matches.

He was anchoring the midfield once again against City, this time alongside Nemanja Matic with Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba both still sidelined with long-term injuries.

While Matic got the game’s only goal, Fred’s contribution did not go unnoticed, with Fabregas tweeting during the game: ‘Fred has been very good in the last few games I’ve watched him.’

Fred was also integral to the United team that secured a 2-1 victory over City at the Etihad in the Premier League, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer delighted with his players despite not progressing to the final.

He told Sky Sports afterwards: ‘I am so proud of these players. They have beaten City twice at their ground. They have come so far these players. They have given me absolutely everything.

‘We have come a long way. Even though we did not create too many clear-cut chances we pressed them back. It pleased me.

‘Of course it is hard to come here and score a goal with 11 never mind 10. It was never a sending off. Absolutely for me a joke. How many times did they foul us?’
