Jamie Carragher has slammed Cesar Azpilicueta, Willian and Jorginho for their ‘naive’ displays against Leicester City.
The Chelsea trio played during the disappointing 1-1 draw, which saw Frank Lampard’s side relinquish their lead after a blistering start.
Lampard’s wait for his first win as Chelsea manager goes on and Carragher explained the Blues’ main issue was their organisation in attack.
‘I don’t think they have to take it to the letter of exactly of what the manager says. Use your brain. Just drop in,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports when speaking about Chelsea’s vulnerability on the counter-attack.
‘It’s the way top managers want to play, it’s not the wrong approach. People talk about them about being naive and getting caught on the counter-attack.
‘They’re got no organisation in possession. Frank wants his full-backs to go forward.
‘Azpilicueta [should be] experienced to know he doesn’t need to go all the time. They’re leaving spaces because they’re not organised in attack.’
‘Experienced players like Jorginho goes flying out, doesn’t make the challenge and then there’s massive holes in the middle of the pitch,’ Carragher continued.
‘It’s too easy to get out and that’s why it becomes a basketball game. It’s too easy to go from one end to the other against Chelsea.’
Willian was brought on in the second half with Chelsea trying to turn the tide back in their favour, but put in a haphazard display.
Carragher identified the Brazilian’s performance as another example of Chelsea’s lack of discipline in possession.
‘Willian, who I absolutely love, if Frank could have had another substitute he would have taken him off, he was that bad,’ Carragher said.
‘They can’t sustain an attack, keep the ball and they’re so open.’
He added: ‘We think of organisation as a defending thing, organise when you have the ball. Manchester City are masters at this.’
Neville agreed with his fellow pundit, wondering why Willian was not reproducing the intelligent performances he did under Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri.
He said: ‘Willian should know that [to tuck in], he’s an experienced player. He’s tucked in for previous managers, the last four years at Chelsea. Why not do it for Frank?’
