Former Celtic gaffer Rodgers signed defender Benkovic on loan from Leicester at the start of the season.
The Croatian has impressed during his stint at Parkhead and there was hope among Celtic bosses that he could remain past this season.
Indeed, Rodgers himself wanted to secure the player permanently when he was in charge.
But Rodgers – who quit the Hoops for Premier League side Leicester last month – now wants the 21-year-old back under his wing.
“The whole plan for him was to get him game time,” Rodgers said.
“We took him up to Celtic which was a huge club with big pressures to play.
“He has done very well.
“All the loan players will look to come back and then we will decide where we will go from there.”
Benkovic only joined Leicester from Dinamo Zagreb last summer in a £13m deal.
But with Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire the first-choice centre-back pairing at the King Power, Benkovic is unlikely to get a run in the Foxes first team any time soon.
Another loan deal may therefore be on the cards for the highly-rated youngster.
He had been out of action since being injured in Celtic’s 3-0 win over Hamilton in January.
But the defender came off the bench to put in 17 minutes against Dundee last weekend in a match the Hoops won in stoppage time.
Back in November Rodgers, when still Celtic manager, admitted he wanted to sign Benkovic permanently for the Parkhead club.
“Filip is here on a loan period and Leicester have the opportunity to take him back in January,” said Rodgers.
“He is really happy here and Leicester let us have him for a reason – which was to come and get game time and prepare him for the Premier League next season.
“The likelihood is that this is a very difficult deal but if there was an opportunity it was one we would look at for sure.
“He is a big talent, but lots of these players from around Europe want to play in the Premier League.
“He is at a big club with Leicester but has come to a very big club here to get experience and is loving every second of it. We will have to wait and see what transpires over the next couple of months.”
