Celtic player ratings vs AIK: Edouard the star but midfielders also impress with 8s

Celtic have one foot in the Europa League group stages after a commanding win over AIK in the first leg of their play-off clash.

James Forrest put the Hoops into the lead shortly after the break then Odsonne Edouard doubled the advantage with an expertly placed free-kick midway through the second half.

The visitors rarely threatened Craig Gordon in the Celtic goal and Lennon’s side know they have a great chance of reaching the next round with a solid display in Sweden next week.

Express Sport have rated how the Celtic players performed in their clash with AIK – but do you agree?

Celtic player ratings vs AIK – Europa League play-off

GKP: Craig Gordon – 5

Had barely any saves to make as Celtic dominated, although he was tidy enough when in possession.

RB: Kristoffer Ajer – 7

Injury to Hatem Abd Elhamed saw Ajer deployed out of position once more but the Norwegian looked comfortably defensively and got forward to support Forrest on several occasions.

CB: Christopher Jullien – 6

Impressive in the air and did the simple things right as he looks to settle at his new club after a stuttering start.

CB: Jozo Simunovic – 6

Didn’t get out of second gear, but also didn’t put a foot wrong as the Hoops nullified the minimal threat from the away side.

LB: Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo – 7

Excellent going forward, with his run creating Forrest’s opener.

There were still some shaky moments defensively but he kept asking for the ball and posed problems in attack with his energy.

CM: Scott Brown – 6

Another one who rarely looked like breaking a sweat, but a marked improvement on his display in the defeat to Cluj.

CM: Callum McGregor – 7

Excellent throughout, dictating the tempo and driving forward from deep.

Was one of the few who didn’t fade in the closing stages and could have added a third late on.

RAM: James Forrest – 8

A brilliant performance from Forrest who fully deserved his goal, with the winger opening the scoring and posing a threat all evening.

CAM: Ryan Christie – 8

Buzzed around to great effect as Celtic dominated for much of the match, hauling his side forward and looking to create openings for his team-mates.

LAM: Mikey Johnston – 7

A bruising evening for Johnston who was outmuscled on more than one occasion, but that didn’t stop the winger from constantly running at the opposition in a tireless display.

ST: Odsonne Edouard – 9

A fantastic free-kick capped an excellent showing from the Frenchman, who led the line with aplomb and never let the AIK defence settle.

SUB: Olivier Ntcham (on for Forrest, 82 mins) – N/A

Helped close the game out.

SUB: Lewis Morgan (on for Johnston, 82 mins) – N/A

Asked to stretch the tired opposition.

SUB: Vakoun Bayo (on for Edouard, 85 mins) – N/A

Enjoyed a rare cameo.
