Long distance runner Andy Grant has become the first casualty of this year’s Celebrity Masterchef.

The retired athlete was eliminated by judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace on Monday after failing to impress with his overcooked lamb and red wine sauce.

Poor Grant said he was ‘absolutely gutted’ to be the first person booted off the BBC cooking competition.

‘My competitive juices were just starting to get going,’ Grant lamented, before adding that it had been a ‘great experience’.

The 35-year-old faced off against designer Zandra Rhodes, Strictly pro Oti Mabuse, retired footballer Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock and Towie star Joey Essex in the episode.

The stars were tasked with making their own sausages, cooking in real restaurants and preparing their favourite dishes for John and Gregg.

Andy got off to a cracking start, bossing the sausage challenge and coping well with the chargrilled octopus starters at the Coal Shed restaurant in London.

Things all went downhill in the last round though, when he whipped up his signature meal of lamb fillet, creamy mash, carrots and courgettes.

The judges said the runner’s meat was overcooked and dry (gutted), while Torode said his sauce had ‘let him down’.

We’ve all been there, Andy.

You think that was brutal – but there’s plenty more celebrities facing the chop in the coming weeks.

Twenty stars signed up to Celebrity Masterchef, including Love Island’s Dr Alex George, Geordie Shore’s Vicky Pattison, Olympian Greg Rutherford and Radio 1 DJ Rickie Haywood-Williams.

They’ll be heading into the kitchen to show us their culinary skills, in their bid to follow in the footsteps of 2018 winner John Partridge.
