CD Projekt now working on two franchises at once

The Witcher 3 – what is next for the franchise?

It won’t be a case of either The Witcher or Cyberpunk in the future, as CD Projekt plan to develop new entries at the same time.

Before the release of The Witcher 3 in 2015 CD Projekt were a largely unknown PC developer and distributor, making games based on a series of Polish fantasy novels nobody had ever heard of.

Today they’re one of the biggest and most respected developers in the world and they’re only getting bigger, with their latest half-year financial report showing revenues up 26% – despite them not having released a new game all year.

Rather than just installing gold taps in the bathrooms though, they’re using this money to expand and embrace a ‘dual-franchise model’ that will allow them to work on both series at once.

They actually describe it as allowing them to work on ‘several’ projects at once, one of which is believed to be a mobile game.

There’s still confusion as to whether they’ll ever make The Witcher 4 though, which they’ve previously stated they wouldn’t.

They’ve seemed less adamant in recent months though, which has caused rumours of some kind off spin-off, featuring a main character other than Geralt, to gain traction.

Given how long it takes CD Projekt to make a game it’s probably best not to get too excited yet, especially as they tend to announce new games a number of years in advance.

They’re currently concentrating on Cyberpunk 2077’s release on 16 April 2020, but even after that their focus will likely be next gen versions of the game and, possibly, the off gain/on again multiplayer mode – which they told us last week was still a possibility.

More imminently though they plan to release an edited down version of their E3 and Gamescom gameplay demo at 7pm BST today, just in case you’re not looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 enough already.
