CBI Scotland has called for a four nations approach to the future of social distancing in the workplace arguing it is the “key piece of the recovery jigsaw”.
The business body revealed that the current social distancing guidelines mean only 68% of staff can physically work on site with 81% of UK firms operating at pre-pandemic capacity.
It is calling for the UK and Scottish government to provide clarity on the direction of social distancing guidelines as businesses emerge from lockdown.
The group argues that both governments need to work together and agree on a consistent four nations approach to enable businesses to plan ahead while ensuring the economic recovery.
It adds that the evidence for making decisions should be published to ensure all firms have a safe and smooth reopening process.
Tracy Black, CBI Scotland Director, said: “Indicative timings have proven invaluable in helping businesses to forward plan and develop contingencies with confidence.
“But with considerable uncertainty still ahead, firms are anxiously awaiting big decisions from the government that will impact the way they run their businesses over the coming months.
“With workplaces operating well short of full capacity, the future of social distancing is a key piece of the recovery jigsaw and will affect all of our lives. That’s why it’s so important to start building consensus among businesses and the public now about the way forward.
“By communicating early and clearly, both governments can help businesses to plan, prepare and invest.”
