Cats has been removed from Universal’s For Your Consideration list, after being thrashed by critics.

The Tom Hooper-directed musical fantasy, which stars the likes of James Corden, Idris Elba and Taylor Swift, had previously been featured on Universal’s For Your Consideration website, which included a schedule of upcoming screenings for award season voters.

Now, it seems that the studio has pulled the film from the list, lessening its chances of becoming a contender for upcoming award ceremonies.

The movie is also said not to be on the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences’ streaming platforms, where members can watch Oscar contenders, according to a source from Variety.

Films that are still listed on Universal’s page include Us, 1917 and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

Cats, which is based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the same name, only managed to gross $6.5million (£5million) in the United States against its $95million (£73million) budget, and has notably received scathing reviews from critics, who criticised the film’s plot and use of ‘digital fur technology’.

However, it’s not all bad news as one of the movie’s musical numbers, Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Beautiful Ghosts, has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song – although it did miss out on being shortlisted for nomination at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Shortly after the movie’s release, Universal was said to be sending out a new version of the film with ‘improved visuals’ following the negative reception of the original.

Director Tom Hooper, 47, also revealed that he had barely finished editing the visuals for Cats when it premiered in New York City on 16 December.

Speaking to Variety on the film’s red carpet, he said: ‘I finished it at 8am yesterday after 36 hours in a row. I just put the finishing touches on.

‘So I’m very happy to be here with it fully finished.’

Cats is out in cinemas now.
