Rash desperately tried to revive his colleague but it was evident that Mason, played by Victor Oshin, had been dead for some time as rigour mortis had already set in.

Viewers were stunned by the scenes, with many flocking to social media to ask whether they had missed an episode that showed what had happened to Mason.

One fan asked: “Have I missed an #Casualty episode! I am so confused with tonight’s one! It made no sense at all?”

Another tweeted: “How is Mason dead? Did not see that coming, have I missed an episode?”

A third said: “WTF is happening today, I blink and boom: Dead Mason”.

Others were convinced that the BBC had forgotten to air the previous episode, writing: “Have they missed an episode of #Casualty out?”

And: “Obviously everything key on #Casualty happened last week when there wasn’t an episode? So we missed it?”

The scenes got even more emotional as none of the Casualty staff could recall when they last saw Mason, with it even being speculated that he had taken his own life.

Rash told the police: “If he was having a hard time, we didn’t know it. We couldn’t have known.”

However, next week’s episode will reveal that Mason actually passed away due to a pre-existing heart condition.
