Casualty cancelled: BBC medical drama taken off air in huge schedule shake-up – here’s why

Casualty has been taken off the air this evening so fans who tune in to BBC One at 8:25pm may be left disappointed by what they find. The BBC medical drama announced the news on the official Twitter page for the show earlier in the week and assured viewers they will not have too much of a wait to catch up with all the drama at Holby City Hospital.

Alongside a video of Connie Beauchamp star Amanda Mealing, BBC Casualty tweeted: “There’s no #Casualty this weekend. Sit tight and we’ll be back next week!”

In the clip, Amanda explained: “Unlike the true heroes of the NHS, we at Holby City Hospital are only pretending and due to the situation at the moment, unfortunately, Holby City Hospital will be closed this weekend.”

“There will be no Casualty. Sorry!” the actress added.

The BBC medical drama will return to its usual slot of Saturday at 8:25pm on BBC One next weekend.

Last week, the BBC released a statement on how the filming of continuing dramas will be impacted following a government update urged people to avoid unnecessary contact with others.

The statement read: “In light of the spread of Covid-19, after much consideration, it has been decided that filming on all BBC Studies continuing dramas will be postponed until further notice. The decision was made after the latest government update.

“We will continue to follow the latest news and advice from the World Health Organisation and public health organisations.”

However, when Casualty’s official Twitter page shared this statement, the medical drama reassured fans that they will not miss out on their favourite show.

They tweeted: “But don’t worry! We film in advance and will continue to bring #Casualty to your screens for as long as we can.”

Casualty’s sister show Holby City was also cancelled last week for the second time in as many weeks.

Due to the latest and ever-changing updates about the ongoing outbreak, the BBC six o’clock news was extended for an extra 15 minutes on Tuesday.

The One Show then aired from 7:15pm until 8pm and EastEnders kicked off during Holby City’s usual time slot.

Casualty continues next Saturday on BBC One at 8:25pm.
