Pounds in your pantry: Go back in time to the era of waste not, want not. Get everything out of your kitchen cupboards and write a list of what is in the pantry before you hit the supermarket. Then aim to build meals around what you already have at home.

Another great idea is to use Supercook.com, it’s a website that allows you to add your ingredients to a list and it will provide you with recipes that match them. The film might inspire you to host your own afternoon tea, which is a lot cheaper than forking out for a hotel one. Get a pretty cardboard floral cake stand for £1 from Poundland.

Tesco’s Finest sultana scones are on offer, down to £1 from £1.50.

Upstairs, downstairs: You might not be able to afford a servant but you can get help around the home thanks to tech. The Google Home Mini smart speaker, £49, is my fave. You can set reminders and listen to podcasts or music. And get waited on at Wetherspoons and McDonald’s when you order via their apps. Use the McDonald’s app this month to get free cheeseburger.

Estate dates: If you love history and old country houses, join the National Trust. Individual membership usually starts at £72 for adults. But family membership (where two adults can visit with up to ten of their children or grandchildren) costs £126.

Catch up for less cash: Need to refresh yourself with previous Downton episodes before hitting the cinema? Find every series on Amazon Prime Video, which costs £7.99 a month, and cancel at any time. If you prefer watching a DVD, get the entire box set of series one to six from Amazon for £28.94, cheaper than the Argos price of £30.

  • Prices correct at time of going to press. Deals subject to availability.
