Caroline Flack’s mother has revealed how the star was ‘frightened’ of her mental health battle becoming public knowledge.

The Love Island presenter tragically died by suicide in February at the age of 40

Her mother Christine spoke with Norwich school student Max Merron, who is on a mission to normalise youngsters talking about mental health and their feelings.

Touching on her own heartbreaking experience, Christine explained of Caroline: ‘We tried to talk to her. But I think when someone is in that place, what we say isn’t being heard.

‘You say, you’ve got this fabulous career and this nice home but actually that doesn’t matter because that’s not how they’re feeling.’

Christine added that Caroline was ‘frightened’ that the public would ‘find out that she was vulnerable’ and was battling with ‘dark feelings’.

She went on: ‘I’ve sat with Caroline and I’ve watched television – the same as everybody else – and I’ve said: “Oh, I don’t like them”. And she’s said: ‘Mum, you don’t even know them”.

‘It stopped and made me think, no I don’t. We judge people and we don’t know them. We don’t know what they’re going through.’

Christine said Caroline ‘never wrote or said anything bad about anybody’ as she ‘knew how much that could hurt’.

Following Christine’s visit to the school, a staggering £1,600 has been raised for the charity Young Minds.

In September, Caroline’s friends and family announced they were set to raise money for suicide-prevention charity Samaritans with a two-day mountain hike, named Climb for Caroline.

Her close friend Bradley Simmonds explained of the hike: ‘Being her personal trainer and realising how important exercise is for everyone, I wanted to do a challenge and I wanted to get her closest friends and family on board…

‘It’s going to be a challenge but it’s going to be a really enjoyable challenge and of course, it’s going to raise such good awareness for a great charity called Samaritans.’
