Caroline Flack’s assault case terminated 10 days after Love Island star's death age 40

Today, Caroline Flack’s court case was formally closed after the CPS were presented with her death certificate, 10 days after she took her own life at her flat in London. The Love Island host had originally pleaded not guilty to common assault following an alleged incident with her boyfriend Lewis Burton, 27.

According to The Sun online, a CPS spokesperson said: “By law we had to give formal evidence to the clerk of the court that the defendant was deceased.

“We had to provide a death certificate as a record that the defendant was deceased.

“Despite media coverage of Caroline’s death and public comments made by her family about her death we needed to make this a formality to close the case.

“It is a formality that had to be be done and now has been.”

The television presenter had entered a not guilty plea to the assault charge at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.

She was later released on bail under the conditions she had no contact with Lewis ahead of a trial in March.

When asked about the criticism of the decision to prosecute Caroline, a Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said at the time: “Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of Caroline Flack.

“Given the tragic circumstances, we will not comment on the specifics of this case at this stage.”

Caroline addressed the court case in an unpublished statement released by her mum Christine, days after her death.

As part of the lengthy statement: “Within 24 hours my whole world and future was swept from under my feet and all the walls that I had taken so long to build around me, collapsed.

“I am suddenly on a different kind of stage and everyone is watching it happen.

“I have always taken responsibility for what happened that night. Even on the night. But the truth is…. It was an accident.

“I’ve been having some sort of emotional breakdown for a very long time.”

The presenter went on to say she was “not a domestic abuser” and said the incident with her boyfriend was “an accident”.

She went on to apologise to her family and friends, adding: “I’m not thinking about ‘how I’m going to get my career back.’ I’m thinking about how I’m going to get mine and my family’s life back.”
