Mike Thalassitis died by suicide aged 26 on March 16, two years after appearing on Love Island.
The show received criticism for the aftercare they provide for those who have appeared as a contestant.
Now Caroline Flack, who hosts the ITV2 dating show, has said she’s “really angry” at the negativity the programme received.
“It’s dangerous and I’m really, really angry,” she told the July issue of Cosmopolitan. “It’s not just that you’re blaming a TV show, you’re blaming people and their jobs.”
Caroline explained: “In life we all have a duty of care to look out for each other, but I don’t think it’s fair to point fingers of blame.
“This is a much bigger issue than just a reality TV show, and when something this bad happens – and I’m talking about Mike – when something this horrible and sad occurs, it’s so dangerous to point fingers within hours and minutes of it happening.”
Caroline went on: “None of us know what’s going through someone’s mind and we can’t sit there and speculate.”
The presenter said attention needs to be on the “bigger picture” when it comes to mental health.
“It’s time to think about the bigger picture, about what’s going on with young men and young people and the pressures of modern life,” she said.
Praising Mike, Caroline added: “It’s just too sad and too sensitive to talk about. He was always a total gentleman to me and I’m going to be a total lady back.”
Caroline is currently in Mallorca getting ready for the new series of Love Island.
Yesterday, the star uploaded a video showing off the villa’s surroundings, including the bedroom.
In an Instagram story, Caroline, who sported a tiger print dress, told her 1.9 million followers: “It’s good to be back.”
Sneaking into the bedroom, Caroline whispered: “I’m going to get into so much trouble,” as she waltzed past the array of tight-knit beds.
The presenter then did her infamous walk into the villa, where she strides in to talk to the contestants.
“This is where I do my slo-mo walk, although I don’t walk in slow motion,” Caroline remarked.
She continued: “This is the route I take, carry down here,” she added, before stating: “I’ll take a short-cut for now because they’re are people working.”
Among this year’s batch of singletons is Strictly Come Dancing professional AJ Pritchard’s brother, Curtis Pritchard and boxer Tyson Fury’s brother, Tommy Fury.
Love Island returns Monday June 3 to ITV2.
