Acclaimed actor Carol Sutton died at the age on 76 on Thursday, December 10, it has been confirmed. Tributes have begin pouring in for the star known for her almost 50-year long career in film and television.

How did Carol Sutton die?

The actress known for her roles in projects like True Detective and Lovecraft Country died on Thursday, December 10.

She died at the Touro Infirmary in her hometown of New Orleans.

Sutton died of complications related to the coronavirus Covid-19 infection.

This was confirmed by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell in a statement on Friday, December 11.

She said: “Carol Sutton was practically the Queen of New Orleans theatre, having graced the stages across the city for decades. 

“The world may recognize her from her performances in movies and on TV — whether it’s Treme or Claws, or Runaway Jury or Queen Sugar.

“But we will always remember her commanding stage presence, her richly portrayed characters and the warm heart she shared with her fellow cast and crew in productions such as 4000 Miles and A Raisin in the Sun.

Cantrell added: “May she rest in God’s perfect peace.”

She was also a staple of the New Orleans community and was awarded a New Orleans Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

She is survived by her son Archie Sutton Jr, daughter Aunya Sutton and her five grandchildren.

Following the news of her death, many stars have paid tribute to the actor and her work on social media.

Queen Sugar director Ava DuVernay wrote: “On behalf of the QUEEN SUGAR family, we celebrate the life of the stellar Carol Sutton. 

“It was our honour to welcome this veteran actress of stage + screen to our show as Aunt Martha in episode 409, Stare at the Same Fires. 

“We bless her. May she rise and rest in peace and power.”

The Morning Show star Mark Duplass tweeted: “I was fortunate to work with her for a few days on Jeff, Who Lives At Home. What a beautiful person and life.”

While actor Stan Shaw wrote: “#CarolSutton was an extremely beautiful, talented & gifted actress with a golden heart. 

“She PLAYED MY MOM in (#GreysonFamilyChristmas). My heart’s broken, Covid is deadly real!

“Love the ppl [sic] God has given you. You’ll never know when He may take them back!”
