Carol Kirkwood: BBC Breakfast star shocks hosts with on-air announcement about new role

BBC Breakfast weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood, 57, told viewers she is currently making plans to write her own fictional book. Ahead of presenting the weather on today’s show, hosts Dan Walker, 42, and Louise Minchin, 50, discussed books with Steph McGovern, 37. The latter challenged the co-stars to guess whose voices could be heard aloud on three selected audio books. Following the game, Steph said she believes Carol would be good at recording an audio book.

“Her voice is gorgeous,” Steph said of the weather presenter. “You’d have her read anything, wouldn’t you?”

The screen then focused on Carol smiling as she overheard her colleagues’ conversation as she waited to present the weather.

Dan then asked her: “Carol if you had to write a book, what would you write it about? I know we’re putting you on the spot here…”

She replied: “Actually, I am going to be writing a book and it’s fiction, so watch this space.”

Carol’s response prompted Louise to shout: “Breaking news,” as Dan appeared shocked and quizzed her further.

“Hold on a minute, forget the weather Carol,” Dan joked. “When’s this coming out? When can we look forward to this?”

She replied: “Well not for a while because I haven’t started it yet but it will probably come out later this year or maybe next year.”

“Well I’m ready,” Dan added, prompting Carol to laugh.

He then asked the presenter: “Can we interview [you] about it? Can you come on the sofa?”

“Yes, but for now let me get on with the weather as I want to show you a video,” she replied.

Elsewhere, earlier this week, Carol told fans the UK is “at risk” of poor weather conditions in certain areas.

In view of her 156,000 Twitter followers, she wrote: “The forecast for the next few days is unsettled.

“We are at risk of severe thunderstorms, localised flooding and feeling humid. Not all of us will catch the heavy rain or thunderstorms though @BBCBreakfast xxx.”

Today, she insisted the weather was improving as she spoke of potential record breaking temperatures.

She wrote: “Max temperatures in parts of Europe in the next few days. We expect some records to be broken @BBCbreakfast x.”

Carol added: “Heat peaks in the UK on Friday & Saturday (depending where you are!) @BBCbreakfast xxx.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6.30am on BBC One.
