Carol Kirkwood apologised to BBC bosses after dogging gaffe got her 'in trouble'

Carol Kirkwood was left red-faced after she accidentally let a very rude word slip out of her mouth during a nightmare weather report on BBC Breakfast.

The 58-year-old meteorologist had been trying to deliver her weather report last year when she accidentally said the word “doggers” on live TV and in front of the thousands of viewers at home.

Carol had been reporting from Greenwich Park early one morning in August 2020, when she mistakenly confused the words dog walkers and joggers which resulted in the word “doggers” – causing the BBC studio to burst out in hysterics.

Mortified Carol wasn’t just left cringing at the blunder, because also she had to apologise profusely to the editor of BBC Breakfast for the mistake – leaving her fearing she was in big trouble.

Recalling the tragic gaffe in a recent interview, Carol said: “My most recent worse one was my dogging one,”, when chatting about her most embarrassing moments.

“I’ll never live that one down as long as I live!

She then cheekily quipped: “That hounds me, no pun intended!”

Carol admitted that she “didn’t know whether to laugh or cry”, and that she was worried she’d start giggling as she could see that even the security man was in stitches.

She continued: “And then the person in my ear said, ‘Graphics on!’ and I thought, ‘Uh oh, I’m in trouble,'”

In the clip itself, Carol had said: “The sun is beating down, we’ve seen lots of doggers,” before she quickly corrected herself, saying: “Not doggers of course, lots of dog walkers and joggers around here!”

Poor Carol described the ordeal as “horrendous”, and cringed as she said: “That was awful and it came about so innocently”

When discussing how the incident occurred, the Met Office-trained star explained: “When I’m on location obviously I don’t have an autocue, I never do.”

National treasure Carol has worked for the BBC for nearly 25 years

She revealed that she often has to think carefully about what words she uses before starting the forecast – because the script needs to be full of keywords to ensure the cameraman knows when to display the weather graphics on screen.

Carol said that everything is done from memory and that she had even rehearsed the forecast with the cameraman before the dogging-gaffe occurred.

It comes as Carol, who is a national treasure, has been looking back on her most memorable moments as she celebrates nearing 25 years with the BBC.

It didn’t stop there, though, because she said it again in the broadcast and the clip went viral – spreading to fans all over the world.

She confessed she had been inundated with tweets and emails from far-away places like Canada, the States, New Zealand and Dubai.
