Carnival Row: UK release date, cast, trailer and plot ahead of Amazon Prime launch

Thanks to lead stars Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom, Amazon Prime’s new neo-Victorian fantasy series Carnival Row has been hotly anticipated by viewers – but there are plenty of other reasons to tune in too.

The model-turned-actress, 27, and actor, 42, play a refugee faerie, Vignette Stonemoss, and human detective, Rycroft Philostrate, who begin an affair after becoming enchanted by one another.

Here’s everything you need to know…

What goes on in the trailer?

There’s a lot to unpack.

The dramatic teaser – which you can watch above – shows the pair bonding after meeting and then kissing each other in a heated scene, before war descends on Vignette’s hometown.

The would-be couple are subsequently separated, leading to Vignette being captured, deported and turned into someone’s maid in her new home.

When she discovers Rycroft is alive and living in the same town as her, Vignette’s anger turns to relief and the pair begin their romance again – despite their union going against the societal norm.

What is the series about?

After the couple reunite, Rycroft focuses his energies on solving a series of grisly murders within the town, which has had an influx of mythical creatures as refugees. The culprit is described as “something unnatural…neither man nor fae.”

Amazon Prime has teased the show by describing it as “a series set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man.

Doomed romance? Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne in Carnival Row (Amazon)

“This growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate, and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society,” they continued.

“Vignette harbours a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.”

Carnival Row is full of mythical beings

In a featurette released in June, Delevingne described some of the mythical creatures that appear in the show.

She said: “A Faery is a wonderful mythical creature that flies, has wings and is from a land called Tirnanock, a Puck is a horned creature with hooves, a Trow is a large lumbering creature kind of like a gentle giant [and] a Haruspex is also a Faery who practises Haruspicy”.

Mythical: David Gyasi with Tamzin Merchant (Amazon)

Who else is in the cast?

David Gyasi (Interstellar) also stars as Agreus, a wealthy faun who moves into an affluent human neighborhood in defiance of the social order. Karla Crome (Misfits) plays Tourmaline, a faerie poet driven from her homeland. Jared Harris (Mad Men, Chernobyl) will feature in a recurring role as Absalom Breakspear.

Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) and Tamzin Merchant (The Tudors) are also set to appear as Piety Breakspear and Imogen Spurnrose.

When and where does it air?

The eight episode series will launch on Friday, August 30 on Amazon Prime.
