Cardiff City release statement on Emiliano Sala toxic poisoning report and criticise plane choice

Cardiff City have released a statement expressing their “concern” at the latest report regarding tragic striker Emiliano Sala.

A report by The Air Accident Investigation Board has shown Sala was exposed to potentially fatal levels of carbon monoxide before the plane he was travelling in crashed over the English Channel on January 21.

The club-record £15million signing never played a game for the Bluebirds after the tragedy as he travelled from France to link up with his new club.

The Bluebirds have now urged those who arranged usage of the plane in question to be “held to account” for Sala’s death.

A club statement read: ” Cardiff City Football Club is concerned at the AAIB’s latest report which once again highlights that the aircraft used for Emiliano Sala was not appropriate.

“We continue to believe that those who were instrumental in arranging its usage are held to account for this tragedy.”

Cardiff City have issued a statement in response to the report

Cardiff became embroiled in a row with agent Willie McKay, who arranged the flight for Sala, after his death and “strongly rejected” claims they neglected Sala.

A statement back in February said: “Our club was in the process of organising a commercial flight for Mr Sala until this offer was declined owing to separate arrangements being made – the planning and specifics of which Cardiff was not privy to.

“Cardiff has serious concerns over the potential unlawfulness of the journey following information that has been released. Clearly more answers as to the details surrounding this terrible tragedy are required.”

A man was arrested in June and quizzed by detectives regarding Sala’s death.

Detective Inspector Simon Huxter, of Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT), said: “We have carried out a wide-ranging investigation into the circumstances of the death of Mr Sala and continue to work with partner agencies including the Civil Aviation Authority.

A man was arrested in relation to the crash in June

“As part of this investigation we have to consider whether there is any evidence of any suspected criminality and as a result of our enquiries we have today, Wednesday 19 June 2019, arrested a 64-year-old man from the North Yorkshire area on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act.

“He is assisting with our enquiries and has been released from custody under investigation.

“This matter therefore is still subject to a live investigation and I would ask the media and members of the public to refrain from speculation, as this could cause additional distress to the families involved as well as potentially hinder the investigation.”
