Eeeooowww: Cardi B has accepted a lead role as an exotic dancer in the forthcoming comedy Hustlers, Deadline reports. Based on a New York Magazine article from 2015, the film centres on a group of strippers who band together to take revenge on their misogynistic Wall Street clients – stealing thousands and thousands of dollars from them in the process. Among the “Please Me” singer’s co-stars? Jennifer Lopez, Crazy Rich Asians’ Constance Wu, and Julia Stiles, as well as Lili Reinhart (Riverdale), Keke Palmer (Scream Queens), and Oscar- and Tony-winning actress Mercedes Ruehl (The Fisher King).
It’s a fitting big-screen debut for Cardi B, who worked as a stripper prior to her breakthrough with “Bodak Yellow” in 2017. The Grammy winner would famously practice her moves on empty subway trains in the middle of the night on her way home to the Bronx – and has made her dancing skills the central focus of her music videos, most notably “Money”. The 26-year-old has previously collaborated with the newly-engaged Lopez, who will play the dancers’ ringleader, on the 2018 hit “Dinero”.
Writer and director Lorene Scafaria said of the casting: “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with this dynamic group of women; we’re grateful to have assembled such a powerhouse cast and can’t wait to start filming at the end of the week.” Trace Lysette (Transparent) and Mette Towley (Cats) are also in negotiations to board the project. Shooting will begin on March 22 in Manhattan.
