Carabao Cup prize money: How much is the fourth round worth?

Incredibly, prize money in the Carabao Cup is only awarded from the semi-finals onwards.

This means clubs competing in the fourth round this week won’t receive any cash regardless of whether they win or lose.

The Carabao Cup’s prize fund stands at just £200,000, with the losing semi-finalists each receiving £25,000.

The winners of the Carabao Cup will take home £100,000.

The prize money pales in comparison to the FA Cup, where the winners earn an impressive £3.6million.

In fact, the FA Cup third round alone is more valuable than winning the Carabao Cup with a prize of £135,000 up for grabs.

However, while the League Cup’s purse may not seem like a huge amount, this does not include money generated through gate receipts and television deals.

Unlike league games, the total sum collected from a Carabao Cup tie is split 45 per cent each way, regardless of where the fixture is played.

This means clubs further down the divisions can benefit greatly when sealing an away draw against one of the Premier League’s top sides.

Burton’s defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in the third round of last season’s competition still earned the club a reported £500,000.

Last term’s semi-final fixtures also drew in £3m via gate receipts.

The final at Wembley saw £2m collected at the gates, meaning each club took home £1m.
