Capturing Commercial Grade Product Photos in a Junkyard with One Light

Commercial photographer, director, and artist Isaac Alvarez of Unplug Productions recently set out to see if he could capture professional-grade commercial product photography with a single LED panel for light, and a junkyard as his “studio.” It seems the answer is yes…

When someone says “product photography,” images of crowded studios with intricate multi-light setups probably come to mind. But Alvarez and the rest of the Unplug Productions team wanted to show their viewers “that you don’t need much gear to take a commercial quality photo.” So they walked over to the nearby junk yard and captured some industrial-themed watch photography using only a Canon 5D Mark IV, a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, and a single Aputure LED panel.

In this case, the images really speak for themselves, so scroll down and let us know if you think they achieved their goal of creating commercial-grade imagery you might see in a glossy:

You can watch them set up and shoot all of these photos in the video up top, after which Alvarez actually takes you into Photoshop and shows you how he turned the raw files into magazine-worthy product photography. It’s surprising to see how close the SOOC files looked to the final product.
