CAPTAIN Birds Eye is to be played by a woman for the first time in 53 years.
Charlotte Carter-Dunn will depict the skipper on the firm’s fish fingers packs.
Eight men had previously played the old salt.
Charlotte, 24, was chosen from among 500 entrants in a competition to find a temporary new captain.
She impressed with an entry photo showing her as the famous skipper — plus ideas on the innovative use of frozen food.
Charlotte, a foster carer from Gloucester who is looking after two children, said: “I can’t believe I will be replacing the iconic Captain Birdseye on packs. It’s all very surreal.
“Shopping frozen helps me cut back on food we waste and have easy meals on the table in no time.
“My freezer’s been even more of a godsend in lockdown. It’s enabled us to reduce shopping trips.”
Steve Challouma, of Birds Eye, said: “We’re excited to be temporarily replacing our iconic Captain with Charlotte.
“She’s a real champion of the benefits of using your freezer more. Saving money and reducing waste are just two benefits.”
Richard Walker, of Iceland, which ran the contest with Birds Eye, added: “We’re delighted to be featuring a real customer on packs of fish fingers.”
