If there’s one thing the last six weeks have taught us, it’s that everyone is secretly an epidemiology specialist – and none more so than Caprice Bourret.
The model and former Dancing On Ice 2020 star has been widely mocked after arguing with a qualified doctor on national TV about knowing more than the experts about how to curtail the spread of deadly coronavirus.
Mum of two Caprice, 48, appeared on Monday’s Jeremy Vine Show alongside Dr Sarah Jarvis, a GP and clinical director of the health information service Patient.
There she argued that she knew better than all the medical experts – including Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance, who have been advising the government on how to cope with the killer virus – because she’d read about how other countries are treating the outbreak.
In a heated discussion with the doctor, Caprice argued that she knew as many facts as the experts… because she’d read them in a newspaper report.
As host Jeremy watched on from the sidelines, Dr Jarvis snapped: “No disrespect, unless you have read every scientific paper and statistical modelling paper that’s come out, you cannot argue with me on that. You can have an opinion but it’s not a fact.”
Interrupting her, Caprice argued: “But I can, I have an opinion.”
She then glanced down at a newspaper on her desk, then said: “This is what I’ve read – let me tell you the facts.
In Taiwan and Singapore, what they did they early on – in week one, in February, everyone was wearing surgical masks-”
The GP cut in quickly to snap: “Which make no difference at all.”
Looking wounded, Caprice said: “Sorry, I let you so let me finish…”
Jeremy then butted in to call for calm, telling her: “Alright, but Sarah is the expert, but go on.”
“This is from a newspaper! This is from somebody from WHO!” Caprice cried out.
Channel 5 viewers – many of who will be self-isolating today at home on government advice – were outraged and baffled by Caprice’s attitude.
“Did she really say ‘let me tell you the facts’ then look down at a newspaper,” one questioned.
Another branded her “cringeworthy in her arrogance and ignorance”, while a third argued: “Caprice on Jeremy vine on 5 needs to leave the building how dare she shush Dr Sarah Jarvis, she needs to shut her mouth!!”
“Gobsmacked! Did Caprice really just argue with an expert about #coronavirus based on an article she read in a newspaper? I must have got a fever and am hallucinating! I’m off to self-isolate!” laughed another viewer.
“Caprice arguing with a medical expert on covid-19 is everything that’s wrong with media. She got her “facts” from a newspaper f**king embarrassing. Fair play to the medical expert for categorically shutting her down #jeremyvine,” another tweeted.
It comes a day after the biggest jump in the UK’s death rate from coronavirus patients after 14 people died on Sunday.
The total number of deaths from the killer disease in the UK now stands at 35, out of a total of 6,526 around the world.
