Cancelled The Last Of Us animated short film revealed online

The Last Of Us was going to get a short film to bridge the gap between it and its sequel, but it’s been cancelled for unknown reasons.

The Last Of Us Part 2 is still scheduled to release in only a few months, and with it being six years since the first game was released, some fans may find themselves needing a refresher on what happened.

Apparently, at one point, Sony itself thought the same thing, as it had contracted animation studio Oddfellows to create a short film that would recap the events of The Last Of Us. But, at some point, the project was cancelled.

Oddfellows has decided to share what was left of its work to the world, posting details and images of the short on its website, noting that it was asked to ‘create a compelling short film depicting the main characters Joel and Ellie as they retell their dramatic story chronicled in the original game.’

It’s possible that this may have violated a non-disclosure agreement of some kind, however, as the web page was quickly taken down. The page is still accessible thanks to Google Cache and, after first being spotted by Nerds4.life, the images have been uploaded to Imgur.

‘This emotional ‘Previously On’ would be engaging for both newcomers and loyal fans – a twenty minute short film that brings the masses up to speed on the story of The Last Of Us. Highlighting the drama, tone, and strength of the characters and story, the film would serve as a strong bridge to The Last of Us Part 2′, said the article.

One look at the images and you can tell that Oddfellows was aiming to tell the story with a drastically different art style compared to the game, specifically citing the likes of The Animatrix – an animated anthology based on the Matrix trilogy – as inspiration.

‘Our proposal was to reinterpret each of the chapters of the game with a unique visual treatment. Using singular narrative device would allow us to bridge the styles and travel seamlessly between the past and present. Ultimately Sony decided not to move forward with this project.’

No reason seems to have been given as to why Sony canned the animation. It’s entirely possible that it’s planning a different approach to recapping the first game or if it has simply decided not to bother. Or maybe it just didn’t like the artwork.

The Last Of Us Part 2 will release on 29 May for PlayStation 4.
