A tennis player went full Canada by sipping on a bottle of maple syrup during the Open Sud de France final in Montpellier.

Canada-born Vasek Pospisil was taking on Gael Monfils on Sunday and was beaten in straight sets by the Frenchman.

It was Monfils’ third time lifting the trophy and it was a clinical display from the tournament’s top seed.

However, it was Pospisil’s unusual method of re-energising himself between games that caught the eye of many tennis fans.

During a changeover, Pospisil was spotted sipping maple syrup and the video quickly began circulating on social media.

Pospisil responded to fans about his syrup antics, saying: ‘I mean if this doesn’t scream Canadian pride I dunno what does.’

Despite the defeat, it was an excellent tournament for Pospisil, who beat Richard Gasquet in the semi-finals in a superb comeback victory.

‘It was an incredible week,’ Pospisil said. ‘I had great wins and I feel like I am definitely improving week-by-week.

‘I will try to rest now, take a couple of days easy and get ready for the next event.’
