Can Kendall Jenner's New Approach To Festival Beauty Put An End To The Clichés?

Kendall Jenner has had a change of approach when it comes to festival style. If before the model was part of the camp that would pair jean shorts with fringing and crochet dresses with Stetson hats, then Coachella 2019 has marked a shift.

On the fashion front, Kendall lead the charge – alongside her sister Kylie Jenner and fellow model Gigi Hadid – in swapping out the sartorial festival clichés for a more fashion-forward approach. Damn, KJ even wore leather trousers in the desert this weekend.

And the fresh take didn’t stop there. Working with her regular make-up artist and ICONIC London ambassador, Mary Phillips, the duo whipped up a look that left the rhinestones and glitter at home and instead championed statement simplicity and a flawless, glowing complexion.

“Festival looks tend to be more playful with all the bells and whistles. You can get away with a lot more things than you can for daily life or red carpets,” Mary told Miss Vogue fresh from the festival. “Kendall always looks naturally glam but she looks much more glowy for Coachella this year. I really wanted to pump up Kendall’s highlight for Coachella, so I chose ICONIC London’s Illuminator because of the way it shines on the skin and glows in the light. We always love fresh, beautiful, glowy skin.”

When it comes to festival make-up, it might be fun to experiment with the bold and the bright, but we also know that the look has to last plus 12 hours. For Mary, it is all about the prep. “Lightly baking will help make-up last longer. I like very sheer natural looking make-up and to keep it looking it’s best I recommend light touch-ups throughout the day.”

Kendall’s look might have appeared to veer on the simple side, but in truth it was a well-balanced multitude of products that came together for a glowy result.

“I always start with Crème De La Mer on clean skin,” Mary said of working on Kendall’s complexion. “For Coachella, I used Soft Luminous Lifting Cushion Foundation in Beige Nude all over for fresh flawless skin. Followed with Nudestix Nudies Matte all over face colour in Sunkissed to add warmth and depth to the skin. I finished the skin with ICONIC London’s liquid Illuminator in Original for that popping cheekbone highlight and on the high points/areas of her face for a radiant glow. I did a swipe of green La femme eyeshadow wash over the whole lid and used Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill mascara on lashes.”

While working with the likes of Kendall, what Mary decides to use will no doubt go on to shape the festival trends that emerge. Her predictions for the year? “Definitely a glossy lip. I think with Coachella taking place in the dry desert climate, a glossy lip is a perfect refreshed and hydrated look. I lined Kendall’s lips with KKW Nude 02 Lipliner and topped them with ICONIC London London’s Lip Plumping Gloss in shade Nearly Nude. It is high shine and long wearing, which is perfect, and I wanted to do a neutral high gloss lip to balance her colourful matt eye.”

However, if there is only space for one beauty product in your festival bag – imagine! – Mary recommends keeping it glowy with a highlighter. “Apply it on the body to glow from head-to-toe! ICONIC London is the perfect brand for highlight because of the Illuminator’s concentrated pigment. You can do extreme highlighting or tone it down for a softer sheen by mixing it in with moisturizer and/or foundation.”
