  • Each Call of Duty League team will host two weekend competitions in its home market in 2020.
  • The season will feature spring and summer splits with a Midseason Weekend event in between, while the playoffs and finals will take place as the League Championship Weekend.
  • A second-tier Challengers league will award $1M+ USD in prizing with online and offline competitions, including some hosted by the Call of Duty League’s franchise teams.

Activision Blizzard’s geolocated Call of Duty League will feature a home series weekend approach similar to that of the Overwatch League, the company confirmed today.

Each of the 12 franchised teams will host two multi-day competitions in their respective home markets during the regular season, with one each during spring and summer splits of the 2020 season. Several teams will compete at each weekend event. Additionally, the league will host a Midseason Weekend event between the splits with all 12 teams involved.

The publisher’s Overwatch League will also adopt a homestand weekend approach for 2020, with the league’s 20 teams each hosting between two and five of the two-day events. However, the Overwatch League will continue weekly competition throughout the regular season without a break, marking a shift from the multi-stage format seen in previous seasons.

The Call of Duty League’s postseason format will include two wild card slots, as well as a double-elimination playoff bracket that will ultimately crown a champion. All of the playoff matches will take place at the Call of Duty League Championship Weekend in summer 2020.

Activision Blizzard has also announced a Call of Duty Challengers league, providing a path-to-pro model for players and teams outside of the main league. The Challengers league will include online matches and tournaments, as well as open competitions. Some of the Call of Duty League teams will also host Challengers competitions in their respective markets. Call of Duty Challengers will offer more than $1M USD in prizing in 2020.

Furthermore, the league will offer a “casual competition series” called the Call of Duty League City Circuit, in which local fans can compete in a 2v2 mode at league events. The winners will represent their respective cities at the League Championship Weekend and earn prizes as well.

The primary Call of Duty League will award more than $6M in prizing in 2020, Activision Blizzard announced last week, with teams competing in 5v5 battles in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for PlayStation 4.
