Cabinet leaker who spilled security secrets should face police probe, says top Tory

A CABINET leaker who spilled UK security secrets should face a police probe, a top Tory has demanded.

Ex-Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said whoever was behind the briefing about Chinese firm Huawei shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it.

Sir Michael Fallon said the police needed to become involved with the leaker of national security secrets

Yesterday the paper reported that the National Security Council had agreed to let the firm help build the new 5G network, despite concerns over security.

Sir Michael told the BBC today: “I’ve known many leak inquiries across Whitehall but they never seem to get anywhere.

“This is too serious a matter now for that, and it does require Scotland Yard to be called in now.

“I hope Downing Street will wake up to that.”

Tory MP Andrew Mitchell said MI5 should be hauled in to conduct a full investigation – including probing Cabinet ministers.

He told Newsnight: “I would say to Theresa May, call in the security service… find out the source of this leak.”

Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright said earlier today: “We cannot exclude the possibility of a criminal investigation.”

Details from Cabinet meetings are regularly leaked to the press within minutes of them happening.

But the National Security Council, which is chaired by the Prime Minister, is made up of officials from the intelligence community and armed forces where only people who have signed the Official Secrets Act can attend, and any leaks are considered more serious.

A No10 spokesperson said earlier: “The prime minister is clear that the protection of information on matters of national security is of the highest importance.”

Cabinet sources told the BBC that an inquiry would be held to find the source of the leak.

Labour has called for whoever it was who divulged the information to be sacked.

There’s not been a formal confirmation of whether Huawei will have a role in the new mobile network yet – but an announcement is on the cards for the end of spring.
