Cabin crew secrets: Flight attendant reveals the one thing crew really want from passenger

Flight attendants are often seen as glamorous world travellers, however, their shifts are long and often hard. From making sure passengers are supplied with enough food and drinks for the duration of the flight to being on hand to support with health and safety issues. While they ask for little in return from passengers, there is one thing that they all secretly enjoy. One flight attendant anonymously took to a Reddit forum to share their secret.

In a forum dedicated to “secrets passengers don’t know” an unnamed flight attendant revealed that crew all enjoy a little gift from passengers during a long flight.

They wrote: “If you give us Flight Attendants your magazines, we will love you!”

While flight attendants can’t take cash tips from passengers, something as small as passing on your finished magazine could make their day.

“Unless some airline has a policy that I’ve never heard of, they will gratefully accept them,” the crew member continues.

With flight attendants working anything from domestic to long-haul flights, their shifts can span into 13-hour stretches.

As the cabin crew member points out: “It really is a small treat during a really long and stressful day.”

The crew member goes on to explain that they are not picky about the type of reading material on offer, and are just looking for something to pass the time during their rest periods.

“We’re not looking for long, thought-provoking articles that spark our intelligence. We probably have a good book tucked away in our luggage to read at the hotel later anyway.

“What we want is to flip pages and look at pictures while we eat our lunch behind the curtain, or wait for the crew bus in the rain.”

Small gifts, like magazines, are a good way to thank crew without getting them in trouble since they usually aren’t allowed to accept cash tips.

Corey Cadwell, spokesperson for Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) told USA Today: “Passengers should not tip flight attendants because flight attendants should not accept tips.

“As professionals, as first responders, just like police and firefighters, a flight attendant’s first mission is to maintain the safety and security of passengers in the cabin.

“There are other ways that are much more beneficial when it comes to thanking them.”

Meanwhile, flight attendant Sharon Chen shared her point of view on web question and answer forum Quora: “More commonly, passengers bring a small gift for the crew, like chocolates or candies or once, Starbucks gift cards.

“These gifts aren’t merit-based and definitely not expected, but they are highly appreciated and may increase your chance of receiving exceptional service.”

Travel site Budget Travellers also offers some tips to flyers who want to show their gratitude to the staff who help them out during their journey.

It states: “When you receive truly extraordinary service, though, a letter or email to the airline praising the work of a specific flight attendant or crew is most appreciated and can sincerely help a flight attendant’s career.”
