Disney has released some previously unseen character sketches for Buzz Lightyear when Toy Story was still in the early stages of being made.

The heroic astronaut toy was originally call Lunar Larry and could have looked very different from the prominent-chinned Buzz we know today.

The pencil sketches, and one colour design, display the different appearances considered for the character including an ‘LL’ symbol on his suit.

It comes as Disney gears up to launch Pixar Fest, an online family festival to mark the 25th anniversary of the classic kids’ film Toy Story.

As well as Pixar movies on Disney+, there will be daily celebrations inspired by Pixar and weekly watchalongs on Disney’s social channels.

There’s masterclasses, online quizzes and arts and crafts for kids to keep the little ones busy for the rest of the summer holidays.

Disney kicked things off with a £750,000 donation to long-term charity partner, MediCinema, to help create new state of the art family cinema experiences in hospitals.

Pixar Historian Christine Freeman said of the sketches: ‘Buzz is one of our most popular characters, and it’s fascinating to see the different ways that Pixar’s artists imagined him during the evolution of his design.

‘Even his name changed over time – from Tempus of Morph to Lunar Larry, to Buzz Lightyear. You can see the LL belt buckle (for Lunar Larry) in a few of these early designs.’
