Business leaders sign up to mentor young entrepreneurs' charity challenge

Teams of young entrepreneurs are being challenged to turn a £500 investment into £5,000 in a charity challenge.

Corporate teams will pitch their business ideas to a panel of mentors including Graeme Carmichael of Deloitte and Austin Flynn of Morton Fraser, as part of the five-month Children 1st Dragons’ Glen challenge.

It is the first time that Carmichael, senior manager, advisory at Deloitte accountants, has taken part.

He said: “This year myself and the other Scottish dragons are looking for inspiring fresh entrepreneurial ideas from corporate teams that can help to raise vital funds for Children 1st. This is the most exciting charity challenge I have ever seen.”

Austin Flynn, a partner in the corporate team at law firm Morton Fraser, is back for his second year as a Dragon.

Last time, he supported a team from the University of Edinburgh Business School who raised over £5,500 by developing and selling one-of-a-kind scratch-off maps of Edinburgh to visitors looking for an artistic and interactive souvenir.

He said: “Dragons’ Glen is a unique opportunity for companies to engage employees and support them to develop a range of entrepreneurial skills. The challenge is the perfect fit for companies that want to expose their graduates and trainees to skills outwith their normal day to day job.”

Mally Smith, representing the University of Edinburgh Business School team, said: “Dragons’ Glen is an incredible experience and a fantastic way to get connected with an inspiring community of people who are really devoted to doing good. It was amazing to work with Austin – he was hugely valuable, giving us advice and supporting us throughout the challenge.”

Since Dragon’s Glen launched in 2013, teams from 29 leading Scottish businesses have raised over £471,000 to prevent and protect children and families from harm and to support them to recover from trauma and abuse. Dragons are now looking for businesses across Scotland to enter teams for the 2019/20 challenge and take the total funds raised to over £500,000.
