Business Fives bursts through the £100,000 charity fundraising barrier

Corporate sports events organisation Business Fives has passed the £100,000 mark in its charity fundraising.

The Edinburgh-based firm launched three years ago with the idea of pitting companies from all over Scotland against each other on the five-a-side football pitch.

Last season, it held regional events in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Sunderland with the best teams in each qualifying for the finals.

This year it has expanded across England, with regional qualifiers in Manchester, Birmingham, Hull and Sheffield and the first English national final on in Leeds.

It also organises regional Scottish golf events along under the Business Fours banner.

The mission has been to create a positive impact on society through encouraging corporate social responsibility and creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere where professionals make connections with like-minded people.

The rate of fundraising sped up after companies were allowed to choose their charity, with 90% of the total being donated over the past two years.

Major benefactors have included Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, MND Scotland and Maggie’s.

Morag McGown, corporate partnerships manager for MND Scotland said: “The Business Fours golf tournament is a fantastic event and we’re delighted that the team at Riddle & Coghill won this donation for us, adding to an incredible fundraising total

“The money will allow MND Scotland to continue supporting people affected by motor neurone disease across Scotland, and fund vital research into a cure for this devastating illness.”

Joyce Ross, Beatson Cancer Charity’s corporate partnerships manager, said: “We are so grateful to be nominated as the beneficiary for this fantastic initiative.

“What a great idea to bring businesses together, while also supporting a charity. The money raised will allow Beatson Cancer Charity to continue supporting many patients and families facing cancer across the west of Scotland.”

For the last three years, Business Fives has also supported the Santander internship scheme by offering university students a paid internship with the chance to add to their CV and learn skills for the work environment.

The events have reduced their environmental impact, switching to refillable water bottles to limit the distribution of single use plastics.

Business Fives managing director John McClarey said: “We are incredibly proud to reach this milestone ahead of schedule and we’re delighted that our clients continue to derive value from the events well as create a positive impact on the communities they operate in.

“We are thankful to the businesses that chose to help along the way.”

The landmark was reached at the Sunderland Event, one of 15 events throughout the UK this summer.

The English national final is on Friday October 4th and there will be qualifying events in Glasgow and Edinburgh before the final in the capital on September 27th.
