Today, Riot Games announced that it has launched the first ever official Belgian League of Legends League, sponsored by BURGER KING. Dubbed Belgian League, six teams will compete against each other in two splits, with qualifying teams getting the chance to compete in the European Masters Play-Ins.

The Belgian League officially starts on Jan. 20 and will see six teams compete, and Riot and gaming and esports company 4Entertainment are collaborating to establish and facilitate the inaugural league.

According to the release, the aim of the Belgian League is to, “…give local talent more opportunities to develop their skills and to raise the Belgian esports circuit to a higher level that way.” Among the six teams that will participate in the league are football teams KV Mechelen and RSC Anderlecht.

“Esports have been booming for several years now – their popularity continues to rise, especially among the younger generations. We see a big overlap between the gaming community and the fans of BURGER KING,” Vic Dresen, marketing manager of BURGER KING said. “League of Legends is known for gamers getting rather heated in the game. Teammates flame each other when they are playing a bad game. In true LoL terminology, this means that teammates will not hold back to insult each other quite fiercely.”

BURGER KING has been very active as an esports sponsor in 2019 teaming up with FaZe Clan to launch its plant-based “Impossible Whopper sandwich, as well as being a title sponsor of the Blast Pro Series.
