Bungie’s first Game2give drive raises $1.6m

Bungie Foundation, the charitable arm of the Seattle-based Destiny developer, has confirmed its first Game2give charity event has raised over $1.6 million.

The funds raised – which saw Destiny fans “prove once again their commitment and generosity through 40,000 individual contributions and the support of 5.5K streamers across 104 countries” – will be used to support Bungie Foundation’s iPads for Kids Program and Children’s Miracle Network, which benefits children in hospitals right across the United States and Canada.

“At Bungie, our purpose is to create worlds that inspire friendship, and we are so very grateful for our community to embrace this so strongly,” said Christine Edwards, senior Manager at Bungie Foundation. “We see this play out each and every day as lifelong friendships are forged, Guardians support their fellow Guardians both inside and outside of our game, and when our community rallies together for incredible causes such as supporting kids in hospitals.”

Bungie Foundation believes “entertainment plays a vital role in the health and well-being of our world and the children in it” and that “technology can bring us together and connect us to those we could not otherwise reach”. It works to reduce the distress and suffering in children through entertainment and partners with humanitarian aid organizations in times of natural disaster and crisis.

“We will change the face of clinical entertainment across the globe, making it so that every hospitalized child has access to the resources needed for distraction, a sense of normalcy, and joy through the toughest moments of their lives,” the organisation says. “We do this work because we believe in the power of play to enable a child’s development, bring about smiles and laughter, arm kids with the tools they need to cope with their situation, and support their emotional and mental well-being.

“We also believe that when a natural disaster strikes, we have a responsibility to galvanize our community to help those who need it the most. With natural events on the rise globally, we will lead a community-wide initiative to support a natural disaster relief effort once per year, using the UN Office of Humanitarian Affairs’ classification system to determine which ‘Level 3’ event we’ll aid. This classification is reserved for the most complex and challenging humanitarian emergencies, which require the highest level of mobilization to meet people’s basic needs.”
