Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has hit out at the Bundesliga’s “irresponsible” decision to continue to play matches this weekend amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Matches in the top-flights and lower leagues in England, Spain, France and Italy have all been suspended for at least the next three weekends due to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19.
But Germany have only taken the decision to postpone from next Tuesday, when UEFA are holding a meeting to determine the future of their competitions, most notably Euro 2020.
All matches in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 are going ahead behind closed doors this weekend, with Alcantara’s Bayern Munich going to Union Berlin on Saturday.

The Spanish midfielder clearly isn’t a fan of the idea, and expressed his anger at the move on Twitter .
Quote tweeting Bayern Munich’s official account’s announcement that the trip to Union Berlin was going ahead, Alcantara wrote: “To @DFL_Official (the Bundesliga): irresponsible, imprudent!
“This is crazy. Please stop fooling around and land on reality. Let’s be honest, there are much more important priorities than any sport.”
Alcantara swiftly deleted his post, but then followed that up with a second tweet in which the quote tweet was removed by the words were much similar.

Bayern’s Champions League last-16 second leg at home to Chelsea which had been scheduled for next week has already been postponed by UEFA prior to next week’s meeting.
There is a strong suggestion that European football’s governing body will move Euro 2020 back a year to allow for the completion of leagues around Europe, which could then run through the summer if needed.
Sporting events around the world are being cancelled, including the Masters golf and Formula 1’s Australian Grand Prix.
