Bukayo Saka put in a man-of-the-match display in England’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday night but there was one curious moment from the Arsenal star.
After Raheem Sterling scored – a goal Saka had been instrumental in creating – the playmaker was picked up by television cameras taking his shirt off.
There was some confusion over exactly why he’d done that – taking your shirt off is usually reserved for the goalscorer – but Saka was actually merely taking off a thermal layer.
And he revealed that he and his friends had been laughing at the mix up.
‘Hey, I was roasting,’ Saka laughed in an interview with England channel Lions’ Den.
‘It was so hot. I had my thermal on. Before that, H [Harry Kane] went down and I tried to take my thermal off.
‘But I thought, what if someone does a quick free-kick and I’m running with my shirt off.
‘So when we scored I just took it off quickly. But yeah the camera was on me and it looked a bit funny.
‘A couple of my boys sent me pictures of it yesterday and I was just laughing at it.’
