Bucket hats are back: How to find a style that suits you

Every so often a new hat style becomes the ‘it’ accessory.

From berets to baker boy caps, the last few seasons have seen a plethora of headgear silhouettes burst onto the scene. And, for 2019, yet another retro style has made a resurgence: bucket hats.

Dior is at the forefront of the trend, having started the majority of the aforementioned millinery trends. For autumn/winter 2019 Maria Grazia Chiuri sent every single model down the runway wearing a bucket hat – redefining the casual nineties accessory into chic high end headwear.

But this isn’t the first time designers have attempted to bring back the boxy style. For spring/summer 2018, the late Karl Lagerfeld made a transparent plastic design his hero item for Chanel, while Rihanna gave a nod to the trend in her Fenty x Puma collaboration.

It’s only now, though, that the fashion set has finally started to embrace the trend. With several different iterations available, it’s easier than ever to find a style to suit you.

1. If you’re a streetwear stan

For fans of all things streetwear, you need a Prada number.

During Prada’s menswear autumn/ winter 2019 show several unisex styles were sent down the runway and they’ve since become the hottest bucket hat on the streets.

From classic monochrome – a la Kaia Gerber – to trendy bright neon, if you’re willing to shell out £225, it’s the way to go.

2. If you’re a city girl

If the idea of the ’90s item makes you recoil slightly, ease yourself into the trend with a plain black bucket.

For additional sartorial points go for a textured design. Taking your cue from Dior, opt for either vinyl or leather.

Floral buckets were huge at Anna Sui and Etro. The latter effortlessly took the accessory from faux pas to fashionable by pairing the statement hat with shell jewellery.

Not a fan of flower power? No problem, you can still get onboard with the printed hat trend with a ton of other designs from vibrant checks to tie-dye.

To be truly ahead of the curve, think safari chic.

Instagram favourites Rejina Pyo and Ganni, as well as Phillip Lim, Sonia Rykiel and Sportsmax, have all given bucket hats the addition of ties that can be knotted under the chin. From rope to fabric, it’s the new way to rock the look.
