BTS are constantly breaking records, whether that’s becoming the first K-pop band to sell out Wembley Stadium, or the first K-pop act to get to number one on the Billboard album chart.
And now, they’ve become the first K-pop act to cover Entertainment Weekly.
RM, Jimin, Jin, J-Hope, Jungkook, Suga and V are this month’s cover boys, and we already see this cover being plastered on bedroom walls across the world.
The magazine was the first non Korean outlet to enter BTS’s studio and Big Hit Entertainment to speak to the boys, and the band addressed that after two number one albums, whether they see a Korean song hitting the top spot on the singles chart.
And ARMYs will be happy to know they won’t change themselves to achieve that milestone.
When asked whether the success of Spanish language track Despacito by Luis Fonsi, RM told EW: ‘You know, Latin pop has its own Grammys in America, and it’s quite different. I don’t want to compare, but I think it’s even harder as an Asian group. A Hot 100 and a Grammy nomination, these are our goals.
‘But they’re just goals—we don’t want to change our identity or our genuineness to get the number one. Like if we sing suddenly in full English, and change all these other things, then that’s not BTS.
‘We’ll do everything, we’ll try. But if we couldn’t get number one or number five, that’s okay.’
The group leader added that they are fine with whatever audiences want to call them – but modestly, don’t want to be compared with some of the greats.
Namjoon said: ‘Sometimes it feels really embarrassing when someone calls us a 21st-century Beatles or something like that.
‘But if they want to call us a boy band, then we’re a boy band. If they want to call us a boy group, we’re a boy group. If they want to call us K-pop, then we’re cool with K-pop.’
In the interview, the boys also gave their secrets on how they chill out, conceding that they can’t really nip out in public in a group anymore.
The Fake Love singers said that they like to go to the cinema (‘always the latest or earliest show’), going fishing, shopping online, and playing StarCraft.
BTS are about to release their new album Map Of The Soul: Persona, and yesterday, the first song from it was teased – Persona, which sees RM take centre stage.
And the video seems to suggest that Map Of The Soul will be another trilogy, just like the Love Yourself era.
BTS’ full interview can be read on EW.com.
