BTS' 5-minute performance in empty Grand Central Terminal took 2 months to organize

On Monday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” fans watched as BTS, an ensemble of dancers and a marching band rocked out to the band’s new single, “On,” in the middle of Grand Central Terminal.

But how was the hit South Korean group able to get one of New York City’s busiest sites all to themselves?

Turns out, the five-minute spectacle took two months and a small army to organize, Metro-North Railroad officials told The New York Times in an article published Tuesday.

A crew of about 180 people arrived at the train station at 10 p.m. on Feb. 8, more than a week before the show aired. The dancers and marching band rehearsed in Vanderbilt Hall and the North West Balcony rooms while the crew set up their cameras and people left the busy transit hub, said Meredith Conti, Metro-North’s manager of special events.

BTS didn’t set foot on the terminal floor until it closed at 2 a.m., so they could avoid being spotted, Conti said. They had about two hours to shoot the video before the terminal’s cleaning staff arrived to wash the floors.

Gavin Purcell, the show’s interim showrunner, wrote on Twitter that the episode was “our love letter to this city.”
