Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has revealed fellow Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo provided ‘references’ that helped seal his move to Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old has hit the ground running since his £67million switch from Sporting Lisbon in January, picking up the February Player of the Month award for his outstanding displays.

Now Fernandes has revealed that Red Devils icon and compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo backed his ability during the club’s background checks for the winter window transfer.

He told Canal 11: ‘The fact that Cristiano has given a lot of good references to whoever spoke to him during my transfer makes me proud, for a player like him to recognise my worth.’

The attacking midfielder points towards international teammates Ronaldo and Nani’s success at United as a target for himself.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani won big trophies here and that makes me want to achieve that.

‘Nani, with whom I had the opportunity to train at Sporting, has always spoken well to me about Manchester United.’

Fernandes says playing at Old Trafford has always been a ‘dream’ for him since he was a youngster growing up in Portugal.

He added: ‘Manchester was a dream club. My brother was a big fan of Barcelona, and I was a fan of United.

‘My father worked for some time in Switzerland and we went one Christmas there and we went to a sports shop and by chance my brother got a Barcelona jersey and I got a Manchester United jersey.

‘At the time I dreamed, of course, but I played for the youth of Boavista, it was a completely different reality. Now I want to make the most of it to leave a mark here.

‘English football is different from the rest. Here teams come to Old Trafford and want to put pressure on, attack and take risks. The intensity of the game is very high. I was thinking fast in Portugal but here I have to think twice as fast.’
