Bruno Fernandes can make his debut against Wolves if Manchester United can get the transfer over the line by noon on Friday morning.

The winter window slams shut at 11pm on 31 January and any players wishing to play in the weekend Premier League fixtures must be registered by their clubs by noon on Friday.

United welcome Wolves to Old Trafford in the late kick-off on Saturday, with the Red Devils hoping to return to winning ways in the league after a 2-0 defeat to Burnley in their last outing.

Fernandes is expected to sign for United before the deadline after a breakthrough in talks on Tuesday.

It was thought the midfielder would not be joining United with both clubs some £20million apart in their valuation of the player.

Fernandes is keen on a switch to England and United reportedly made an improved offer of €55million (£46.5m) plus €25m (£21m) in bonuses.

Sporting Lisbon have refused to budge on their asking price, but accepted the new bid and Fernandes is now poised to fly to Manchester to undergo a medical.

If United miss the deadline for the weekend fixtures, Fernandes could make his bow for his new club against Chelsea on 17 February.

Fernandes will be United’s first signing in January and the 25-year-old was quizzed about his imminent transfer by Portuguese press.

Asked if the Premier League was his preference, Bruno replied: ‘It always was.’ But when asked specifically about Manchester United, Fernandes said: ‘Anything really.’

Fernandes is expected to be given an immediate run in the United side due to injuries to midfield duo Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer asked for a new midfielder last summer and United have finally been able to deliver for their manager.

The Norwegian is under increasing pressure at Old Trafford, as tensions rise among United fans.
