Terminally ill Maureen Taylor, 66, from North Yorshire, was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) ten years ago.

This constricts the airways and causes difficulty breathing and she is now uses a wheelchair and needs 24-hour care.

With the coronavirus pandemic it means she is particularly vulnerable.

So her sons, site manager Steven and miner Richard, decided to do something special for her without risking her health and arranged to serenade her from afar.

They enlisted their pal Gareth to lend his dulcet tones for an emotional rendition of Stand By Me, Maureen’s favourite song.

The mum tearfully watched on from the balcony of her care home in Redcar.

She delighted in seeing her sons occasionally join in on the song as they moved onto other hits she loves.

The brothers decided to serenade their mum after finding out she may not have very long to live.

Unfortunately with the Covid-19 crisis, it means they are unable to visit their beloved mum.

But they wanted Maureen to feel loved and see her face once more.

Steven, from Teeside, explained: ‘Mum’s all we’ve got left. She’s a single mum so she raised us all on her own.

‘We’re really close but obviously we haven’t been allowed into the home, so we wanted to do something special for her and the residents to cheer them up.’

He asked his friend Gareth who’s in a band to come and make the special day happen.

And even bystanders joined in on the moment of joy.

Since Steven posted a video of the heart-warming performance on Facebook, it’s gone viral, racking up more than 33,300 shares and 4,500 likes.

He added: ‘I didn’t think it would go so viral. People have been sending us messages from all over the world.

‘Mum was over the moon. I didn’t ring that day so she must have been thinking “the b*****d”.

‘My mum is all we’ve got left and it brought brightness to her day.’

Singer Gareth added: ‘It was a fantastic experience.

‘Just seeing Maureen’s face light up and watching all the residents dance and sing along inside the home was a lovely feeling – especially at times like this when they can’t get out and their loved ones can’t get in to see them.

‘The reaction was great. All the residents were dancing and the nurses were filming it.

‘Even residents from nearby streets were coming out to see what was going on.

‘Since the video went online, I’ve had loads of messages from people all across the world, not just the UK, but as far as America saying lots of lovely things.’

How sweet.
