Brits are shunning Spain in favour of Turkey and Tunisia where their pound stretches further this summer

BRITS are increasingly choosing Turkey and Tunisia over the most popular destinations in Spain according to new data.

While Spain remains the number one holiday spot for UK travellers overall, interest in resorts like Menorca and Costa Blanca have actually seen a fall compared to last year.

That’s according to holiday comparison site TravelSupermarket, which looked at searches made on the site between January 1 to July 18 this year for holidays departing between May 1 and September 30 this year.

Turkey has jumped up to fourth place from seventh last year, while Tunisia has jumped into 23 – up from 75 last year.

These searches have translated into real bookings.

Just a couple of months ago, Thomas Cook revealed how bookings for Turkey and Tunisia were both surging for the holiday provider.

It’s no surprise, given how much Brits can get for their money in Turkey and Tunisia.

In Turkey for example, a meal out for two can cost as little as £15 while beers are around £2.

Tunisia is even cheaper for drinks, as beer costs around £1, and meals are around the same as in Turkey.

It’s boosted by the fact that the FCO have lifted travel bans against both countries after terror attacks – in Sousse for Tunisia and in Istanbul for Turkey.

They are also among the market leaders for all-inclusive holidays, which many experts have recommended to “lock-in” prices given Brexit uncertainty.

And the trend looks set to continue thanks to increased capacity from big holiday firms.

The fluctuations in the value of the pound against the Euro has also increasingly pushed Brits to look elsewhere for cheap deals.

So while Tenerife and Majorca have managed to hold on to their positions as top resorts for Brits, others have fallen out of favour.

Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca (including Benidorm), Costa Brava, Ibiza, and Menorca have all seen a fall in interest, for example.

Emma Coulthurst, travel commentator for TravelSupermarket, explained that Brits are predominantly looking for value this year.

One example is the Algarve in Portugal, which has moved up in rankings.

Emma explained: “It is not surprising to see more British interest in Portugal this year. Brits are realising that the country offers one of the best value holiday options within the Western Med for a beach holiday this year.

“Prices are, on the whole, slightly cheaper than in nearby Spain; eating out in Faro tends to be around 15 per cent cheaper than in Alicante and even 10 per cent cheaper than Benidorm, one of the cheapest Spanish resorts.

“A beer is likely to cost you £2.70 in Alicante but only around £1.60 in Faro and a glass of wine around £2.”
