In true Capaldi fashion he swigged from a bottle of beer as he marched up to the stage to collect his first statuette.

His good pal Niall Horan, in a dapper purple suit, met him with a hug and handed over the prize.

There was confusion at home though when Lewis’s short acceptance speech was muted.

The singer downed his beer and actually said: “Thank you very f***ing much” before leaving the stage.

His second gong was presented by Sir Tom Jones, and this time Lewis had a different bottle of booze in his hand: Buckfast.

He couldn’t resist pointing out that, contrary to popular belief, his hit Someone You Loved wasn’t written about Love Island’s Paige, who Lewis used to date.

It is in fact about his late grandma, but rather than dwell on the sad origins of the song, he made it into a joke about the ITV2 reality show.
