Many Britons spend months saving, planning and preparing for their annual holiday. Whether its an adventure holiday in Asia or a beach holiday in Barbados, hopping on a plane and jetting off to warmer climates is commonplace for many. However, new research reveals that there is another form of holiday that Britons are increasingly turning to.
According to ABTA: “When it comes to the types of domestic holiday people prefer, breaks to the seaside look set to remain strong, as do luxury short breaks, and dog-friendly staycations are expected to be popular.”
Meanwhile, special events and historical occasions are also partially to thank.
ABTA list the early May Bank Holiday being moved to mark the 75th anniversary of VE day, as well as the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Father’s journey, and sporting events such as The Euro 2020 which will be welcomed in London in June and July.
The rise in staycations is predicted to provide a massive boost to the British economy, specifically within the hospitality sector.
A study by UK hospital job board caterer.com found that, on average, people spend £98 a night on accommodation and £40pp doing in a restaurant during a staycation.
Neil Pattison, Director at Caterer.com, said: “Whilst domestic trips are on the rise, there is also positive news for the sector in terms of international tourism, with a new tourism sector deal released last year committing to 130,000 new hotel rooms catering for the millions of additional tourists predicted in the UK over the next five years.
“For both employers and employees within the sector, this is welcome news, demonstrating ample opportunity for growth and development.”
Though spending your money on a UK holiday may not be the first thing to come to mind, the country is home to a vast number of varying landscapes and opportunities for unique experiences.
Matt Fox, CEO and co-founder of holiday rental provider Snaptrip, said: “The United Kingdom is the home to some truly beautiful destinations, there really is no reason to not go and explore more of it.
“Some might be surprised that Whitby is the most popular staycation destination, many think of the Lake District or Cornwall when they think of ‘British holiday’, but there’s a real emerging trend for holidaying in the North East – it’s got some of the most breathtaking scenery our country has to offer, and it’s quite a bit cheaper.”
